CM opens land record centre at cantonment

CHIEF Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that the historic project of computerization of land record will be completed by June 2014 in 140 tehsils and this modern system will be fully functional in all districts of the province.

He was addressing an inaugural ceremony of Land Record Centre at Lahore Cantonment on Sunday. The chief minister said the project would enable the citizens to obtain proprietary deed of their land as well as facilitate them in the matters regarding transfer of land, which would be a big change. He said the project would eliminate Tehsildar and Patwari culture; the government was not against the Patwaris and Tehsildars but there was a need to change their mentality, which had been a source of problems for the people for centuries, he added. He said that despite summaries of the government officers, he had not recruited even a single Patwari during the last six years and had appointed honest and talented persons through Punjab Public Service Commission at the service centres and adopted an effective checks and balances system for this purpose.

He said promotion of trade and economic activities was essential for the elimination of poverty, unemployment and terrorism; he was fully determined to rid the country of energy crisis; agreements were being signed with foreign energy companies and investors for this purpose and he was confident the efforts would be successful and energy crisis would be overcome. Addressing the media men he said executive and press go hand in hand and the government took guidance from analysis and comments of the journalists; journalist community would have to play a key role in steering the nation out of despondency. He said politicians, generals, judges, journalists and all segments of the society would have to make collective effort to take the country out of problems. He said that journalist community raised its voice against price-hike due to which an effective system was evolved by the government for the provision of essential items to the people at the fixed rates and such measures were taken which resulted in considerable decrease in the prices of essential commodities. He said it was the responsibility of the journalist community to promote awareness among the people about the modern system of land record not only in the country but also among the overseas Pakistanis.

Earlier, the Chief Minister inaugurated the Land Record Centre, Lahore Cantt. Planning & Development Chairman and Project Director Irfan Elahi said with the completion of this project, proprietary deed would be available in 30 minutes, while the process of mutation would be completed in only 45 minutes.

Corruption: Shahbaz Sharif has said that corruption is the biggest hurdle in the process of development and collective efforts are needed to root out this menace. In his message on World Anti-Corruption Day, the chief minister said transparency and elimination of corruption was the hallmark of the Punjab government and an example of good governance had been set by promoting transparency in the province. He added that impartial world institutions had also appreciated the efforts of the Punjab government for eradication of corruption and irregularities from the society.

A fire in Lahore

Factory fire flares up fears in Walled City

The rooftop of a three-storey building was burnt down while goods and raw-material worth hundreds of thousands of rupees reduced to ashes when fire broke out in an old structure in congested Sootar Mandi, rescuers said on Thursday.
However, no casualty was reported in the fire, which erupted in the second floor of the building located inside the walled city. Police said that the fire created panic in the entire Lohari Gate area as several policemen were deployed around the site to provide smooth passage to the firefighting vehicles.
Rescue officials say they believe the chemical caught fire, shortly after an unidentified smoker threw a burning cigarette on the packets placed in a godown.
Several firefighters on fire brigade vehicles rushed to the site immediately but could not reach the spot to launch operation because of narrow streets. The building was evacuated soon after the fire broke out.
The rescue workers managed to put out the fire after hours long hectic efforts. Police said that a local businessman had set up two small shoemaking units on the first and second floor respectively while his office was established on the top floor. Further investigation was underway.
Meanwhile, a good number of local residents gathered outside the building and staged protest demonstration against the city district government, urging the authorities to remove the factories from the residential locality.
They said that lives and properties of the residents are at stake since several small factories and manufacturing units are located in the densely populated area. They were of the view that the factory fire incidents in the residential area could lead to a major disaster if the government failed to shift such units away from the heavily populated locality.

The draft of a law against Sheesha cafes has been finalised to be presented for legislation soon with the aim to ensure strict control on drugs use and Sheesha smoking in Punjab.

“Tobacco Control Ordinance-2002 has failed to control drug addiction effectively as around 300 Sheesha cafes are still operating in the city only”, regretted Consultant, Anti Drugs/Narcotics Campaign,Syed Zulfiqar Hussain during his lecture on “New trend of Sheesha Cafes & Drug Addiction” here.

The lecture was organised by Ravian Forensic Society,Department of Chemistry, Government College University, Lahore in collaboration with Drug Advisory Training of Youth Council for Anti Narcotics .

S. Zulfiqar said that the posh downtown area of Gulberg is the hub of health threatening ‘Sheesha cafes’.

Dean of Chemistry, GC University Dr Islamullah Khan said that in recent years the youth has developed a novel way to spend their leisure time i.e by smoking flavored/coloured Sheesha which is highly injurious to health.

“A typical one hour long ‘hookah’ smoking session involves 200 puffs while an average cigarette contains 20 puffs”, he explained.

Associate Professor Dr Muhammad Zahid,President of Ravian Forensic Society Ms. Shaista,and a number of students were present on the occasion.

IJT protests???

 Violent IJT protest paralyses Lahore

Violent protests paralysed Lahore for hours after police evicted activists of Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) from Hostel No 16 of the Punjab University on Monday morning.

Around a dozen of IJT activists were picked up by the police from the hostel. In retaliation, the fellows of the arrested activists, boarding in PU Hostel No 15, pelted stones on police, teachers and employees. However, the situation was soon controlled after the varsity’s employees retaliated in the same manner.

Dozens of police jeeps lined up on the Canal Road near the PU hostels on early Monday and entered Hostel No 16 around 6:30am. Some IJT activists gathered near Govt College of Science, Wahdat Road, a stronghold of Jamiat, and protested against the police action. One armed person, allegedly belonging to IJT, was arrested from the Punjab University after the operation.

Meanwhile, addressing a press conference, PU Hall Council Chairman Dr Muhammad Akhter said girls have been shifted to Hostel No 16 after getting it vacated. He said the PU teachers, employees and students were thankful to Chief Minister for taking strong notice of the incident and not accepting any pressure. He said on Sunday, Hostel No 16 was almost vacant but some 10-15 Jamiat activists tried to occupy a few rooms; the administration sought police help and the rest of the rooms were vacated from Jamiat’s possession and police arrested some activists as well.

He said during the checking, three bottles of liquor, “bhung”, a bullet and cards were found in the room of IJT Nazim Rao Adnan, who was illegally residing there. He said while the female students were shifting to the hostel, the IJT activists hurled some stones but the female students’ determination remained unchanged. He added the hostel would cater to the needs of almost 200 female students.

Meanwhile, in a press release, IJT denied link with liquor bottles and other stuff recovered from the hostel and termed the same a conspiracy to malign Jamiat. The IJT spokesman said Jamiat was demanding construction of new hostels and new buses for the students but the PU administration had allegedly opened a new front against Jamiat. He alleged many of the activists had gone missing. He flayed Punjab Education Minister Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan for speaking against Jamiat, saying instead of issuing statements, the minister should address the problems being faced by the students.

However, the PU spokesman said if a terrorist could be arrested from the room of Nazim of Jamiat, the recovery of liquor bottles and bhung was not a big issue. He said on one side, Jamiat was demanding more buses but in fact, allegedly IJT set government and private buses on fire.

Talking to media persons, outside the Punjab Assembly, Education Minister Rana Mashhood Ahmed said police arrested some nominated people involved in manhandling and thrashing two faculty members of the PU Law College but some non-students and armed elements were instigating bona fide students to protest over this issue. He added these elements had been found linked to Taliban and had illegally occupied the PU hostels.

He said some self-proclaimed activists of a student organisation, IJT, were acting as the so-called nazims, as no student organisation could nominate its office-bearers without registration. He added over the years, the student unions were banned in Pakistan and the same law was applicable today, owing to which, activities of such organisations were illegal.

The minister said committees had been formed in public colleges and universities across the province, having the facility of hostels, to point out illegal occupants, adding the committees had been empowered to take legal action against such elements.

Rana Mashhood appealed to the parents of those students, who are stopping the academic process in Punjab University through brawl, interfering in smooth flow of traffic, snatching keys from drivers of public transport and hooliganism, not to allow their children to become tools in the hands of such elements, who are putting the educational career of young generation at stake for their vested interests.

Later, a protest by IJT activists against police crackdown paralysed traffic on the Canal Road. The situation started worsening a few hours after the sunset when scores of the IJT activists started converging at the Campus Bridge and within an hour the protest swelled considerably, leaving the traffic system collapsed within the next few minutes. Within the next few minutes, the mess stretched to adjoining areas as hundreds of vehicles finding no way moved onto the key roads.

Meanwhile, IJT activists allegedly set a bus of a private company on fire on the Wahdat Road, snatched keys of various vehicles and fled. The IJT activists allegedly attempted to stop buses near a private hospital. Some IJT activists partially damaged a bus near Dak-Khana Stop, Mughalpura. The infuriated protesters smashed the windscreen and windowpanes of the vehicle by stone-pelting. However, the protesters left the spot prior to police action.

Police sources said that Lahore police registered at least eight cases against the miscreants, two FIRs against the IJT activists under 7ATA.

Lahore police increased patrolling on roads from the University Campus to Thokar Niaz Baig. Police officers performing duty at University As per DIG Operations, at least nine mobiles had been dispatched to the troubled area, besides deploying additional force there.

Following the violent incidents, the Lahore Transport Company (LTC) CEO was forced to suspend the operation of public transport buses across the city at around 2:40 pm. This created problems for the commuters and swarms of people were seen awaiting public transport at the bus stops as they did not have information of the suspension of bus operations. The commuters condemned this behaviour.

The LTC got registered an FIR in the Muslim Town Police Station against anonymous attackers in this regard.
