Pakistan‚ India have no option but to work for peace: Shahbaz

Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said peace cannot be established in the region without resolving the issues of Kashmir‚ water and Siachin between Pakistan and India.
Speaking at a function here in Lahore on Wednesday‚ he said there is no option for Pakistan and India but to strive for peace.
He said that both the countries should pursue the goal of peace and work for the welfare of their people.
The Chief Minister said Pakistan's nuclear programme guarantees peace in the region.

Shia cleric Allama Nasir Abbas shot dead in Lahore

Shia cleric Allama Nasir Abbas of Multan was shot dead by unidentified armed men on Sunday night.

He belonged to the Tehreek-i-Nifaz-i-Fiqh Jafaria (TNFJ).

He was going to his residence after attending a Majlis at Qaumi Markaz, Shah Jamal at around 11 pm when armed motorcycles intercepted his vehicle near FC College Underpass and opened fire.

Abbas was seriously injured in the attack and was taken to Shaikh Zayed Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Model Town SP (Operations) Tariq Aziz quoted witnesses as saying that Allama Nasir Abbas and his student Hafiz Anjum were going to his Eden Value Homes residence near Thokar when assailants on motorcycles intercepted their car and opened fire. The student and Allama’s driver escaped unhurt, the SP said, adding that the gunmen escaped.

Following Allama Nasir's murder, a large number of his followers reached Shaikh Zayed Hospital.

Expressing their anger, they chanted slogans against the government and damaged the premises.

They further demanded that the body be handed over to them.

After receiving the body, the protestors marched towards the Governor House.

Police officers inspected the site of incident and supervised the collection of forensic evidence. In the hospital, they recorded the statements of the survivors.

Large contingents of police were at the crime scene and at the hospital till late in the night.

Condemning the killing of Shia cleric, Majlis-i-Wahdatul Muslimeen has announced three days of mourning.

A spokesman of Majlis Wahadatul Musalameen said that the government has failed to stop sectarian targeted killings.

Meanwhile, Tahafuz-i-Azadari Council in Karachi also condemned the killing and slammed the government for failing to protect Shias in the country.

Robbers kill two in separate incidents

Two citizens were gunned down by robbers on resistance in two incidents in the Gujarpura area on Saturday.

A 45-year-old man, identified as Malik Riaz of China Scheme Haji Yaseen Park, was on his way when two armed robbers intercepted him near a marriage hall and shot at and wounded him when he tried to foil their dacoity attempt. The unidentified robbers fled on a bike. The victim was removed to hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was a driver in a paint factory and lived in a rented house with his wife and children.

In another incident, a 50-year-old man, identified as Ramazan of Rachna Town, Shahdara, was shot dead by robbers on resistance. The deceased was stated to be a fruit-cart vendor and sole breadwinner in his family. Police have shifted the bodies to morgue and registered cases.

FALLS TO DEATH: A 37-year-old labourer died after falling from the roof of an under-construction house in the Chuhng area on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Javed Faiz, hailing from Vehari. He had lost his balance and fell from the roof. He suffered injures and was shifted to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Mechanism to keep prices under control: Yasin

Punjab Cabinet Committee on Price Control comprising Punjab Food Minister Bilal Yasin, Chief Secretary Punjab Naveed Akram Cheema, IG Police Punjab Khan Baig and Secretary Industries Irfan Ali visited Faisalabad and Chiniot today to check the prices and availability of the essential commodities.

They went to Model Bazar Jhang Road, Sahulat Bazar Faizan-e-Madina Susan Road and inspected the arrangements made by the district govt. for providing daily use items to the public on controlled prices. They checked the quality and stock of the edibles in these bazaars and compared the prices with whole and general market. 

They said that the whole sale prices of essential items should be reviewed on daily basis and keep strict eye on demand and supply as a proactive approach so that timely measures could be taken to avoid shortage. Talking to the media, Punjab Food Minister said that a comprehensive mechanism had been devised to keep the prices of essential items under control by the Punjab govt. under the vision of CM Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif.

He said that market committee system had been revamped by introducing various reforms and corrupt officials of market committees had been removed for maintaining good governance in this department.

He said that under the directions of CM Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif timely measures had been taken to arrest the trend of the unwarranted price hike. The Minister maintained that the process of auctions in fruits and vegetables markets was being supervised by the district and divisional administration which helped in controlling the unjustified prices.

He said that hoarders and profiteers of essential items would not be spared at any cost for which Price Control Magistrates had been mobilized to take action against the unscrupulous elements on daily basis and their performance was also being checked daily.

Earlier, the members of the Punjab Cabinet Committee on Price Control were briefed by the Divisional Commissioner Sardar Akram Javed and DCO Noor-ul-Amin Mengal about the measures taken for controlling the prices of the essential goods.

The Commissioner told that as many as 152 Price Control Magistrates in the four districts of the division had been assigned duties to check the specified markets on daily basis. He said that process of auction in vegetables and fruits markets is being monitored daily early in the morning by the officers and himself as well.

He informed that an electronic price board had also been installed at busiest intersections Kohinoor chowk for keeping the public aware of the prices of the vegetables and pulses.

DCO informed that 16 Sahulat Bazars were being held in the district thrice in a week.

  Ishaq Dar urges investors to en cash dollars to avoid losses

LAHORE: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has criticized ‘pseudo intellectuals’ for their predictions about the devaluation of rupee and increase in the US dollar price.
He was addressing the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) award ceremony here at the Governor’s House on Saturday.
The US dollar price would be brought down, he said and urged the investors to encash their dollars to avoid losses.
About the IMF loan, Dar said it was unavoidable as the bad policies adopted by previous regimes were responsible for the current economic situation.
Talking about the economic achievements of government, he said it had paid 3 billion doallars liabilities of the previous government and fulfilled the sovereign commitments as a dignified nation.
It has achieved 5 per cent GDP growth due to its economic reforms, he added.
Endorsing the idea of privatization for better economic activity by APTMA Group Chairman Gohar Ijaz, the minister said the government would privatize some of the institutions.
The government would recover outstanding Rs 800 million from the Etisalat.
The finance minister conveyed the heart-felt felicitations to APTMA from Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.
